Oil painting classes are open to students ages 12 and older.
Why Oil on Canvas?
Having explored a variety of artistic mediums—including watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, ceramics, and pastels—I am especially drawn to oil painting. Celebrated by artists throughout history, oil paint offers rich color, a beautiful velvety finish, and exceptional depth.
Because oil paint dries slowly, it allows time to blend colors, refine details, and make adjustments throughout the creative process. It can also be applied with a palette knife to build texture and add dimension to a painting.
What You Will Learn
As your painting develops, you will explore a variety of techniques, including:
- Drawing and transferring an image using the optical indexing, or grid, method
- Resizing an image while maintaining accurate proportions
- Color mixing and color selection
- Brushwork and paint application
- Blending, layering, and creating texture
The grid method will help you accurately enlarge and transfer your chosen image onto canvas, providing a strong foundation for your painting.
By the end of your project, you will be the proud owner of an original oil painting created from start to finish. Display it in your home, give it as a meaningful gift, offer it for sale, or simply enjoy the wonderful sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something uniquely your own.
